Why Visit Tasmania's Wine Routes?

Tasmania’s naturally elegant wines are made from grapes grown in climates similar to those of the famous European wines – with mild summers and long autumn days that slowly ripen the grapes.

Tasmania’s boutique, yet burgeoning, wine industry boasts four distinct wine touring routes – the north, the south, the east coast and the north-west. All are within easy reach of major population centres or en route to some of Tasmania’s icon attractions. Each route offers a diverse and sophisticated range of wine styles. These wines are available from an equally diverse array of cellar doors – from ultra modern restaurants to quaint cottages to heritage stables and converted backyard sheds. Each vineyard has its own special charm and character and as we know, wine never tastes better than when you sample it direct from the cellar door! 

You may also have the opportunity to meet the producers first-hand, who have a passion for their grapes and finished wines, who have strived for excellence in their vineyards and wineries and who have toiled to capture the rewards offered by Tasmania’s climate and soil.

As you will see from the route maps, you can tour the Tasmanian Wine Route easily by car or on a guided tour. There are a number of tour companies that offer half or full-day visits. 

Take your time to explore the varied wines of the Tamar Valley, located north of Launceston along both sides of the Tamar River and north-east to Pipers River. Explore the Derwent, Coal River and Huon Valleys, an easy drive from Hobart. En route to Cradle Mountain visit the north-west vineyards or sample wines en route to Freycinet and Wineglass Bay on the sunny east coast.

Tasmania’s first vineyard was planted at New Town, a Hobart suburb, in 1823.  In 1848, its white wine won an award at the Paris Exhibition.

Tasmania now produces naturally elegant cool climate wines including pinot noir, riesling, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon, pinot gris, gewurztraminer and sparkling wines.

Today, Tasmania enjoys a national and international reputation as a leading producer of some of Australia’s premium cool-climate wines, winning high praise, and an array of medals, from wine judges and critics alike.

So relax and rejuvenate your senses with a visit to one or more of Tasmania's wine routes.

Wine Tasmania encourages the responsible consumption of alcohol and recommends the following:

• don't drink on an empty stomach;
• drink plenty of water;
• use spittoons; and
• if you plan to drive - choose a designated driver or take a guided wine route tour.
