Cool Climate and Tasmania

Cool climate wines are characterised by a range of qualities. These generally include:

  • Grapes grown in a cool climate
  • High quality wines – this association is because vines tend to produce lower volumes of fruit in cooler climates; economic viability relies on a high quality and value of wine
  • Wines that have a highly developed sense of origin (terroir)
  • Globally decentralised niche production
  • Regionally intensive production
  • Strong histories of innovation and traditionalism
  • Favorable locations for viticultural development under climate change scenarios
